LBJ White House Tapes: Past Programs

 
 
Listen phone conversations from August & September, 1966. LBJ discusses federal spending for social programs and for the war in Vietnam. He also complains about a Congressional resolution calling for a reduction of U.S. troops in Europe. Pres. Johnson talks to Congressional leaders and Cabinet members and gets an invitation from the wife of his Defense Secretary.

This Saturday, hear the conclusion of a call about a new book on President Kennedy that contains potentially embarrassing information for LBJ. There are also calls about a key appointment and problems for a bill creating a Department of Transportation. Participants in these calls include Supreme Court Associate Justice & Johnson adviser Abe Fortas and Postmaster General Larry O’Brien, LBJ’s former chief Congressional aide.

In these conversations LBJ deals with objections to a bill creating a Department of Transportation, troop levels in Vietnam and hears congratulations on his 58th birthday. You’ll also hear part of a long call about a new book on President Kennedy, that could prove embarrassing for LBJ. Participants in these calls include Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and Supreme Court Associate Justice and Johnson adviser Abe Fortas.

LBJ also deals with criticism of the Secret Service from the commission investigating the assassination of President Kennedy.
